3rd trip with clay for Yulia

The Yulia came under the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge on December 1, 2016 with a cargo of Kaolin clay. She was built as the Harlequin in 2011 but later that year, she became the Yulia. The clay is not only another cargo brought to Duluth; it has become a new local industry at Lake Superior Warehousing, at the Port Authority. Below is some information from the Port Authority’s Summer, 2013 issue of their quarterly, North Star Port.

Kaolin is a hydrated aluminum silicate crystalline mineral used as a bulking agent or filler in a variety of industries including ceramics, paper, paint, plastics, rubber, sealant, adhesive and chemicals manufacturing. This particular clay adds gloss/shininess in papermaking and is being mined, refined and shipped by IMERYS.
The world’s largest producer of quality kaolin, IMERYS has deposits and production plants in the UK, U.S., Australia and Brazil. The product arrives in bulk as a powder, which is conveyed indoors to a building at the Port Terminal for further processing into a slurry for final delivery by tanker truck to customers in the region.

The Muntgracht arrived Duluth on November 11, 2014, on her first trip to the Twin Ports. Above, she discharged machinery at the Port Terminal that will be loaded onto trucks that will carry it to its final destination in the Twin Cities. Below, the Yulia arrived Duluth on November 7, 2014 to discharge kaolin clay at the Port Terminal. She discharged that same cargo on her first trip here in June, 2013. She will soon depart Duluth to load grain in Thunder Bay.

Duluth on a Saturday night

Saturday evening, June 8, 2013, Duluth harbor. The Arthur M. Anderson had arrived in port at 7 am that morning with limestone to discharge at the C. Reiss terminal in West Duluth. Finished with that job, she departed Duluth at 7:38 Saturday evening (below) for the Two Harbors CN dock to load iron ore pellets. Not sure why she is pointing away from the Aerial Bridge above (possibly turning around after fueling). Behind the Anderson, we see the Joseph L. Block, arriving under the Aerial Bridge at 7 pm, on her way to discharge limestone at the CN dock in West Duluth. At the right, we see the Liberian flagged  Yulia still at the Port Terminal where she has been discharging cargo for several days.

In 2013, the Anderson has worked the limestone trade, loading in Port Dolomite and Calcite in Michigan and discharging that cargo at the Hallett dock and C. Reiss Dock in Duluth, at Buffington and Huron in Ohio and in Detroit. Her trips to Duluth with limestone are followed by loading iron ore pellets at the CN docks in Duluth or Two Harbors which she takes to either Gary or Conneaut. Then after a couple trips loading and discharging limestone in the lower lakes, she brings a load up here to discharge before loading iron ore pellets for her downbound trip.
