Spar Garnet

The Spar Garnet is expected to come through the Superior entry today and tie up at the Burlington Northern dock to load taconite brought down by train from Hibbing Taconite on the Iron Range. The Norwegian owned salt water ship will carry that cargo to a Mittal Steel facility in Algeria. Mittal is the largest steel company in the world and has ownership interest in the taconite mine at this end and the steel mill at the Algeria end. This is one of at least three ships that will carry taconite to Algeria this year. The Spar Garnet has not been here since 2003 when it loaded wheat for Portugal. Photo taken on October 15, 2003.
