The Kapitonas Marcinkus is one of 7 sister ships, all 479 feet long and flying a Lithuanian flag. Since 1990, when Lithuania became the first Soviet republic to declare its independence, they are all owned by a Lithuanian company and named for Lithuanian sailors. Before 1990, they were all named for Russian sailors and owned by a Russian company. Before and after 1990, the ships were operated out of the city of Klaipeda in Lithuania.
