Merry Christmas Federal Sakura

The last saltwater ship of the season, the Federal Sakura, arrived last night (December 17, 2012) at 7:56. She was of course greeted by the annual Bentleyville Christmas light display in Canal Park.

Federal Sakura follows towed Sherwin out

The Federal Sakura (on left side of combined picture above) arrived off the Duluth piers last weekend and finally departed Friday evening. The John Sherwin (right side) arrived in the harbor 25 years ago and finally departed Duluth just before the Federal Sakura. The Sherwin is being towed to Chicago by the Great Lakes tug Ohio. The Federal Sakura left for Thunder Bay to continue loading wheat for Algeria.

Federal Sakura with tug Minnesota

Since it was built in 2005, the Federal Sakura has made the Twin Ports a regular stop. It was here twice last year and here today for her 2nd visit of the season. It has been at anchor off the Duluth piers for several days, waiting for a berth here after making stops at Erie, Burns Harbor and Milwaukee. When it comes in, it will load wheat to take to Venezuela. Above, the Federal Sakura received an assist from the tug Minnesota while entering the harbor this past June.

Federal Sakura here for wheat

The Federal Sakura should have arrived off the Duluth piers around midnight last night. It will spend the night at anchor and then come in this morning at 6 and go over to the CHS 1 grain terminal in Superior to load wheat for Algeria. Built in 2005, it entered the Duluth harbor for the first time last June (above). It was here again in September last year. This is the first trip this season for the boat and its crew from the Philippines. Like most Fednav boats that come here, it is bright red.
