The HHL Mississippi has a bow thruster, you can see the symbol for it in these pictures. Also, if I’m not mistaken, it costs money to enter the bay & dock, so that’s another possible factor that causes them to wait on the lake.
Why are the 2 ships waiting so short? Also why do they have to wait? Did they just get to the port early? What do they do while they wait?
Nelson, they have a pilot boat go out & bring the ship in. Not sure if waiting at anchor has something to do with customs? I’m sure the hands have plenty of work while waiting at anchor!!! Frequently, have seen tugs guide foreign flagged ships in, I believe due to them not having bow or stern thrusters. As for being short, many foreign ships that come in are much smaller than the freighters that run the Great Lakes.
