The salt water vessel Chestnut arrived Duluth on Friday afternoon, September 2, 2011 (above and below). She is going to Hallett #5 to load bentonite for Brazil. This is her first trip to the Twin Ports.
Bentonite is a clay that is used to help manufacture taconite pellets. It’s the “glue” that holds the pellet together. I think a pellet is one-fifth bentonite. I think there is some process used to remove the clay from a pellet when it is used.

pretty vessel…surprised me when she came under the bridge, as she did not show up on AIS. what is bentonite?
