Algoma Olympic
Algoma Olympic was built in 1976, is 730 feet long and flies the Canadian flag |
In May, 2011, Algoma Central purchased the fleet of Upper Lakes Group. The Canadian Olympic was a part of that fleet. She is now named the Algoma Olympic.
The Canadian Olympic most often comes to Duluth Superior to load coal at Midwest Energy Resources in Superior. In 2009 and 2010, she has also loaded some iron ore pellets. The Olympic part of her name recalls the Olympic Games held in 1976 in Montreal, the year she was built. She is owned by ULS International (formerly Upper Lakes Shipping) of Toronto. She can carry 28,400 tons of cargo. A 250-foot self-unloading boom on her deck allows her to discharge cargo in a couple hours. She is powered by twin 5,000 hp diesel engines that give her a cruising speed of 15 miles per hour. Click here for other pages featuring the Algoma Olympic.
