Backwards under the Duluth Lift Bridge

The CSL Assiniboine went under the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge this morning(August 11, 2014)backwards. Such a thing is not easy to surmise from the photo above but have you ever seen the Lift Bridge down with a boat in the ship canal going forwards. Either way, check out the video above.

  1. Whats the difference as long as it is done safely !

  2. that would have been neat to see when we were in Duluth on vacation. But the forward going ones are just as awesome!!!

  3. Rita from Georgia says:

Saves fuel, saves time and there is a good view out the back of the pilot house windows. Easy to go to anchor to wait this way. Proves it can be done.

  4. So is that what you would call backAssiniboinewards? If you envision her as a semi-truck (a water-going semi), it looked completely normal. Thanks for the video!

  5. Greg Hayden says:

Nope I am wrong built in 1977 I see. Regardless I believe they were showing off. Maybe their view is better with the pilot house on the front end?

  6. Greg Hayden says:

Oh I suspect they are showing off. Until recent years most Lakers were single screw and backed poorly.
Isn’t this a new class of ships?
    China built?

  7. thanks for capturing that!

  8. Wow! I’m impressed when they go forward! Do we know why she was going backwards?

  9. a very bizarre sight!
