Mesabi Miner here for the winter

The Edwin H. Gott will be the last boat to come in for winter layup. This morning (January 17, 2012), the Mesabi Miner (above) arrived here after delivering her last cargo of the season in Taconite Harbor. She will spend the winter at the Midwest Energy Resources coal dock in Superior. That will make it real convenient to start the 2012 season in only two more months. She will likely load more coal for a port within Lake Superior, before the Soo Locks open (usually around March 25th). The Miner may get two  coal deliveries done by then. See video below

Thanks for all your hard work this season Ken, and thanks for putting Blake and me on the camera in August.

Thanks for the kind words. Last year, i tried to move the camera to the zoo but they weren’t interested; it will probably stay on the bridge; we could call it a weather cam since u can see Duluth weather with it, at least the weather outside my window. Just think, less than 2 months before the next boat; that should be the Mesabi Miner taking coal to a Lake Superior port, usually Marquette. I predict that will happen on March 15

Great job, Ken! Thanks for doing this video for us!

That was awesome! When we visited Duluth in 2006, we got to see the Mesabi Miner go out into Lake Superior. Thanks for sharing the video of her coming in, this afternoon!

I, too, wondered why the ‘Miner’ did not whistle today on the way to lay-up. Maybe they are sad @ the end of the season… or maybe nobody (except Ken!) was out there to greet them???

It was good to see her come in. All my pictures of her are going out. Great video! Only one thing missing-no whistle. I liked the lighthouses and the beautiful sky as she cleared the inner light. As always, Ken, fantastic job! Thanks for all the time you spend so we can see these wonderful sights. Looking forward to March when we can do it all again.

Scratch that: Miner moved around midday from Port Terminal 1 to Calumet Fuels, and then a few hours later shifted to Midwest Energy.

Looks like the Mesabi Miner went to Port Terminal berth 1 after arriving, not Midwest Energy. Did she change layup berths or is this just a brief stop for repairs or supplies on her way to SMET?

Thanks, Ken!
