The tug Undaunted pushed the barge Pere Marquette 41 through the Duluth ship canal and out into Lake Superior today (September 14, 2009).

peremarkette20090914_2935 Cargo? Scrap metal from Azcon Corporation. This was the 5th trip to the Twin Ports for the tug Undaunted and barge Pere Marquette this year. On the first trip, she loaded taconite rock at the Hallet Dock. The next 3 trips, she loaded scrap at the Hallet Dock and this trip as above. It is hard to believe that the barge started life in 1941 as a ferry, considered by many to be the most luxurious ferry ever built. She had other names in between then and now.

When I worked on that Boat I don't remember ever having stuff stacked that high, but when I was on her we were moving stone which is denser. I also never sailed on Lake Superior while on her. That is a pretty good operation PM has.

Where is destination of scrap metal shipment. Did it go to Steel Mill at Sault Ste. Marie Ontario, or U.S. A. based steel mills.

From earlier comment of throwing load into lake:: U.S. Coast Guard would notice full barge leaving Duluth, Empty barge entering Soo Locks area basin.

Ryerson is still layed up at Fraser Shipyard in Superior.

The Ryerson did come out of layup briefly and unfortunately went back in and has been at Fraser in Superior. I haven't noticed it listed as being in Layup anymore on Duluth Shipping and haven't been in the area to see if she is still there. She was there about four weeks ago when I was last visiting. Not sure where she is now.

What does Undaunted mean?
Where is the Edward L. Ryerson? I thought it was in Duluth and never came out of winter layup.
Do sister ships sail together?

Scrap iron/steel is a valuable recyclable commodity–local firms pay area folks who collect and deliver scrap steel—they don't do this to turn around and hire a barge to dump it in Lake Superior!!!!”

How do we know they just don't dump all that junk in the lake:)
