Boland approaches Aerial Lift Bridge

The John J. Boland loaded limestone at Calcite, Michigan and should be here this afternoon to discharge that cargo before moving over to the CN dock in West Duluth to load taconite pellets for a Mittal steel mill in Indiana Harbor. This is the 4th trip here this season for the Boland, all of them to load taconite, although the first three found it loading at the Burlington Northern dock in Superior. The Boland started life in 1973 as the Charles E. Wilson. When American Steamship Company’s boat called the John C. Boland was sold to Lower Lakes Towing in 2001, their boat called the Charles E. Wilson became the new John C. Boland, seen above arriving in Duluth on July 13th, 2002.
